Confidential statement concerning: Jeffery Anne Tatum
From: John M. Chowning, composer in residence, City of Berlin

Knowledge of the applicant:

I have known Jeffery since 1971 through her participation in contemporary
music performances and courses. I have followed her activities since her
graduation from Stanford and recently I have had the opportunity to spend
some time with her in disscussion of her plans to study law. I feel that
Jeffery is an altogether mature person, whose idealism is realistic and
whose integrity and compassion will serve her well in the legal profession.

As I did a great deal of advising at Stanford in my capacity as
faculty resident at one of the dormitories, I believe that I am able to
judge with reasonable fairness the substantive interest of students in
chosen professions. I would rate Jeffery's interest very high, indeed,
and should point out that it has developed from a context of commitment,
considering her activities during the years since her graduation from Stnaford
University.

Jeffery has a mind which is open to new ideas, which is perhaps best exemplified
by her interest in new music. In my experience of seven years of teaching
at Stanford, I consider Jeffery's self motivated interest in new music
to be unusual and an excellent indication of her ability and willingness
to exercise her intellect in domains of human experience which are new
to her.

As Jeffery's father is an attorney, the scope and possibilities within the
profession are familiar to her. I beleve that she has considered carefully
the opportunities and finds herself comfortable from the point of view
of temperament with the demands and exactness of the profession.

Judgement of applicant's ability to pursue studies in law:

I consider Jeffery to be an outstanding candidate for law school. I base
this on my sure impression of her intelligence and on what I perceive to
be an unusual motivation. She understands that the rigor of study is great
and she is confident, as am I, that she can meet the standards required
in a professional school. Although she is not in the "women's movement",
she is very conscious of the need for women having capability and motivation
to meet the challenge of higher education and assume professional roles.
I judge Jeffery to have enormous capability and motivation.
